The most
common herbs used in the Daily
Household
Basil
Basil is probably
one of the most used herbs within common households. It
adds such a unique and strong flavor to all kinds of
cooking that its use, is simple and easy. It is known to
be best friends with tomato and comes in different forms
and colours. Colours range from Green (being the most
common) to purple.
Chives
This is another
very common herb within households and used a lot within
dips and sauces. The preferred state for this herb is
definatly fresh as when 'dried' provides the least
flavour in contrast to any other dried herb. When fresh,
this herb can be used with almost any food by simply
sprinkling over your fish, chicken and vegetables. Don't
be afraid to use a lot, as it has a unique flavour which
will be pretty difficult to over come by using too
much.
Mint
Mint is a very
flavorful herb and this can be said even with the strong
smell it provides. Mint is extremely good for drinks,
even if you didn't want to use it in cooking. Provides
great flavour for green teas, lemonade, desserts and even
alcoholic cocktails such as Mojito's. Within food though,
mint is well associated with lamb, usually with a minty
thick sauce. However, as with most herbs, they are
perfect being tossed in salads, cheeses and even
dips.
Oregano
Oregano provides
great flavour when fresh and dried. It is typically used
in Mexican, Italian and Spanish dishes due to its strong
and dominant flavor. Used with many soups, pasta's and
shell fish, it can also provide the basics for a simple
meal and alter it to a great memorable dish. A simple
recipe would be to add it to cheese on toast, with tomato
sauce.
Parsley
Parsley is most
commonly used as a garnish on the sides of dishes to add
a professional presentation. but on the side, its mild
flavour provides many emphasis on French and Greek
dishes. Found within many soups, meats, parsley is a
great herb to get used to.
