Herbs are wonderful
plants that have been around forever and serve many varying
purposes. From treating illnesses to cooking and even believed
by many to possess magical powers. In recent years Herb
gardening has increased in popularity. Have you considered
started a garden? If so, let me share with you some tips and
things to consider as you begin.
First, Decide On
The Type of Herbs You Wish To Grow
Annuals - die after one season
Biennials - live for two years
Perennials - recur yearly
Secondly, What size herb
garden do you want to plant?
There are many books available that will assist you in learning
about specific herbs and their growing needs. You should be
able to purchase one from favorite bookstore. Or you might
check with your local library and save yourself a little
money.
Here Are a Few
Planning Tips:
1. Get a pencil and paper and draw out your garden.
2. Be sure to plant your annuals separate
from the perennials. Otherwise you will disturb the perennials
when it's time to dig out your annuals at the end of the
season.
3. Consider planting your perennials
around the garden edge to make it easier when it comes time to
till or dig up your garden.
4. Plant your herbs so that the taller
ones do not block the light from the shorter ones. If planting
along a fence or a wall put the taller plants in the back and
gradually slope out by size so the smaller ones are in the
front. If planting in a circular bed, plant the tall ones in
the middle and then work out by size to the small ones around
the edge.
5. Herbs need space to grow so be sure to
plant them accordingly.
A
Few Ideas On Garden Design:
1. Paths are nice for moving around in your garden so consider
dividing your bed so that you can easily get to the plants as
you need.
2. Stones or bricks make very nice borders
around your garden.
3. An old wooden ladder makes a nice
effect as well. Just lay it in your garden and place your herb
plants between each rung.
4. Wagon wheels can be used in a similar
fashion as the ladders. Use the wedges of the wagon wheel as
you plant borders.
Tips on Starting Your Herbs
Remember, each type of
herb has its own needs and that is one of the reasons it is
important plan out which herbs you will be planting. Doing this
will help you know how to take care of your herbs.
1. Abide by the rules of germination and soil temperature when
starting from seeds.
2. Once sprouting has begun, be sure to
monitor the humidity, amount of sunlight, and air circulation
for your plants.
3. Once the leaves appear, make sure to
create the correct space between plants.
In summary, herbs are an easy plant to grow. Providing them
with the correct amount of sunlight, appropriate drainage,
fertile soil, and adequate humidity will enable your herb
plants to flourish. By doing these few simple tasks you are
bound to produce a nice harvest of herbs.
